NextImg:Payton Pritchard makes bold claim about Celtics’ 3-point record

NEW YORK — Last week, Derrick White broke Isaiah Thomas’ single-season Celtics record for made 3-pointers. Six days later, Payton Pritchard did, too. Jayson Tatum also is likely to surpass Thomas’ mark of 245 made threes by the end of the season, as he entered Tuesday’s against the New York Knicks with 243.

Three record-setting 3-point shooters on the same team? That’s remarkable — but not surprising to Pritchard, who could see the record falling again next season.

“Unbelievable team, unbelievable shooting performances from a lot of guys this year,” Pritchard said after Boston’s morning shootaround at Madison Square Garden. “And the crazy thing is next year, we could have three new guys do it, honestly. Sam (Hauser) could easily do it. He just was probably not healthy enough fully this year. And (Kristaps Porzingis), if he played enough games, would easily be able to do it. There’s definitely a bunch of people.”

Hauser (153 threes entering Tuesday) and Porzingis (93) were well off record pace this season, but both are shooting better than 40% from deep for a Celtics team that set the single-season NBA record for made threes in a season with five games to play. White, Pritchard and Tatum rank fourth, sixth and seventh in the league, respectively; no other team even has two players in the top 15.

Pritchard also broke the NBA record for 3-pointers in a season by a bench player. All but four of his 246 made threes came in games he did not start.

The Celtics have attempted 13.8% more threes per game than they did last season, when they led the league in 3-point makes and attempts and ranked last in 2-point shots.
