The Patriots waived recently claimed defensive tackle Marquan McCall with a failed physical designation, per the NFL transaction wire.

McCall was claimed off waivers from the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday. He was not present for Wednesday’s practice.

The Patriots waived wide receiver Tre Nixon to claim McCall. Nixon, who appeared to suffer a shoulder injury in Saturday’s preseason game against the Packers, reverted to injured reserve after going unclaimed.

The team now has an open spot on their 90-man roster after cutting McCall, who goes back to waivers where he can be claimed by any of the other 31 NFL teams.

The Patriots must trim their roster from 89 players down to 53 by Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. ET. They play their third and final preseason game Friday in Tennessee against the Titans.

Christian Barmore, Carl Davis, Daniel Ekuale, Davon Godchaux, Lawrence Guy, Jeremiah Pharms Jr., Sam Roberts and Justus Tavai remain on the Patriots’ roster at defensive tackle.

Nixon is now the third player on the Patriots’ injured reserve list, joining linebackers Terez Hall and Raekwon McMillan.

The Patriots found a knee injury in McCall’s physical, per NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.
