The New England Patriots have not made any official announcements regarding coaching titles for the 2023 season, but they did update the coaching section of their website with some notable changes.
Joe Judge, who previously was listed as an offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach, is now listed as assistant head coach. Evan Rothstein, who was brought over from the Detroit Lions with Matt Patricia, now is listed with the title of assistant quarterbacks coach after serving as an offensive assistant in 2022.
The Patriots have made four new hires on their coaching staff. Bill O’Brien is listed as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Adrian Klemm as offensive line coach, Will Lawing as tight ends coach and Keith Jones as NFL coaching fellowship/defense. O’Brien previously served as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator before holding head coaching jobs with Penn State and the Houston Texans and a two-year stint as Alabama’s offensive coordinator. Klemm, Bill Belichick’s first draft pick with the Patriots as head coach in 2000, came over from Oregon. Lawing worked with O’Brien at Penn State, Houston and Alabama. Jones previously worked at Arkansas as a defensive graduate assistant.
Former offensive assistant Tyler Hughes is no longer listed on the coaching roster. Patricia, who served as an offensive line coach/play-caller in 2022, left for a post with the Philadelphia Eagles as a senior defensive assistant. Patricia was the Patriots’ defensive coordinator before being hired away as the Lions’ head coach in 2018. He returned to New England in 2021 as a senior football advisor after being fired by the Lions late in the 2020 season. Nick Caley, who was with the Patriots’ staff from 2015 to 2022 and last held the title of tight ends coach, left for the same position with the Los Angeles Rams.
Judge primarily worked with special teams with the Patriots this spring. He previously served as New England’s special teams coordinator before leaving to become the New York Giants’ head coach in 2020. He returned in 2022 after being fired by the Giants following the 2021 season.
The Patriots’ offense struggled in 2022 under the leadership of Patricia and Judge.
