NextImg:Patriots training camp Day 29: Mac Jones hits 2 TDs to close final preseason practice

FOXBORO — Judging by Wednesday’s padded practice, the last of Patriots training camp, Mac Jones’ preseason might be over before Friday’s game even kicks off.

Jones kept busy over an 18-of-23 day, hitting DeVante Parker and Kayshon Boutte in the end zone with his final passes during a simulated 2-minute drill. Jones’ workload indicated he’ll be limited to a couple drives, if any, during the Pats’ preseason finale at Tennessee. He lived up to the “way better quarterback” standard Patriots safety Adrian Phillips set while speaking about Jones’ progress after Tuesday’s practice.

Phillips shared his confidence is “through the roof.” Jones made that plenty evident Wednesday by connecting on two long balls to Kendrick Bourne early in team drills, then firing RPO throws into tight windows and whipping touchdown passes to finish practice. Jones’ spraying the field with completions wasn’t the only welcome sight for the Patriots.

Starting right guard Mike Onwenu made his practice debut after spending all summer on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Onwenu participated in positional drills and initial stretching, but was held out of team periods. So was tight end Mike Gesicki, who returned to practice Tuesday after missing eight days with a fresh shoulder injury.

Another tight end, Hunter Henry, got banged up during Jones’ 2-minute drill and was held out of the rest of practice. Moments later, rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez dealt with an apparent left leg injury along the sideline and was held out. Both players remained on the field, indicating their injuries aren’t serious.

But like Jones, Henry and Gonzalez may have had their respective preseasons come to an early end after a noteworthy final practice.

Elsewhere, Boutte continued his push for a roster spot, Ezekiel Elliott matched Rhamondre Stevenson’s output and Bill Belichick’s pass rush turned up the heat.

Here are the Herald’s complete practice observations.

Returned: OL Mike Onwenu

Absent: DB Jonathan Jones, OL Cole Strange, WR Tyquan Thornton, OL Kody Russey, CB Isaiah Bolden

Limited: TE Mike Gesicki, RB/WR Ty Montgomery, WR Demario Douglas, DL Carl Davis

PUP: S Cody Davis, DL Trey Flowers

Non-Football Illness: OT Calvin Anderson

Notes: For the first time in weeks, Jones was spotted conditioning on a separate field. Douglas joined him there with the specialists early in practice, his second straight day being limited. Davis later walked off the main practice field to do the same.

Montgomery was mostly held out of team drills after participating in some 7-on-7 work. Gesicki wore a red, non-contact jersey. Strange visited practice late, not wearing his helmet or pads. No sign of Thornton, Bolden or Russey.

Mac Jones’ first two passes in 11-on-11 work followed a similar trajectory and found the same target.

Jones launched two bombs on his only attempts during the first team period, his first down the right sideline for Bourne and another on a deep crosser. Bourne pulled away from rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez on the first catch, then backup defensive back Quandre Moseley on the second. Bourne saved his best for last in camp.

Judon’s days of limited participation and sitting out practice feel like they were ages ago. He’s back, he’s been back, and on Wednesday, looked never better.

Judon tallied three “sacks” of Mac Jones in team periods, racing by his quarterback after beating the Patriots’ top offensive line. He worked on both edges and led all defenders in would-be sacks. So long as Judon is on the field, he is a force.

Note: The passing stats below were tallied during competitive 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods only. The stats in parentheses represent the quarterbacks’ camp-long performance.

Like Bourne, Boutte has played his best football down the stretch of camp, catching a team-high four passes on as many targets Wednesday. He scored along the back line of the end zone to cap Jones’ 2-minute drill and caught an earlier touchdown pass from Bailey Zappe. Boutte has maximized his snaps with Demario Douglas sitting out team periods the last two days.

Jones didn’t register a pass breakup, but he did stop a touchdown pass with his tight coverage of Kendrick Bourne along the back of the end zone in an 11-on-11. Bourne fell out of bounds with the catch, unable to keep his feet in. Later, Jones blew up a bubble screen by driving his would-be blocker into JuJu Smith-Schuster, who would’ve gone down for a loss in a game setting.

The rookie allowed catches on four of five targets during team periods, including one long ball to Bourne and Parker’s touchdown that helped punctuate a 2-minute drill. In Zappe’s 2-minute drill, backup receiver Thyrick Pitts, who signed midway through camp, beat Gonzalez for another grab.

For a backup quarterback, Zappe’s performance met the mark. But his mistakes were the same that have ailed him throughout camp: batted balls and holding onto the ball too long in the pocket. Zappe had three passes knocked down at the line and took two would-be sacks.
