NextImg:Patriots training camp Day 12: Matt Judon returns with 3 sacks, Bill Belichick’s defense strikes back

FOXBORO — Shortly after the Patriots reported for work Sunday morning, fresh off a rare off day, they split into meetings.

Offensive players holed up in separate rooms from their defensive teammates As always, Bill Belichick’s assistant coaches rolled tape from the team’s previous practice and voiced constructive criticisms to sharpen the players’ focus and performance. But according to safety Jabrill Peppers, his group received something different.

A “ration.”

The defensive coaches were supposedly dismayed over what they’d seen in Friday night’s film, despite the relatively relaxed nature of that practice. So hours later, armed with their coaches’ fury and feedback, Patriots defenders struck back at Bill O’Brien’s offense over one of their best days of the summer.

All three quarterbacks were intercepted Sunday, while they combined for eight would-be sacks over more than 50 dropbacks in live team drills. Mac Jones fired the first pick, an underthrown ball that found first-round rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez during 7-on-7s. Bailey Zappe slung the last, an end-zone pass where backup corner Shaun Wade looked like the intended target. And third-string veteran Trace McSorley hurled a pair of tip-drill interceptions that dropped into the laps of rookie Marte Mapu and reserve safety Joshuah Bledsoe.

Up front, four backups populated the first-team offensive line, which allowed a stream of pressure to regularly affect Jones. The backups to those backups didn’t offer much help to Zappe, either. In fact, the Pats have yet to field a fully healthy offensive line all summer, a growing concern given their suspect talent at offensive tackle.

Elsewhere, Matt Judon dominated in his return to full participation, the offense force-fed Tyquan Thornton and Belichick stopped practice to send his defense for a lap.

Here are the Herald’s complete practice observations.

Returned: N/A

Absent: CB Jonathan Jones, C David Andrews, OL Cole Strange, ST Matthew Slater, RB/WR Ty Montgomery

Limited: OT Trent Brown

Non-contact jersey: LB/S Marte Mapu, TE Johnny Lumpkin

PUP: OL Mike Onwenu, S Cody Davis

Non-Football Injury: OT Calvin Anderson

Notes: Andrews was absent for the first time all summer. Jones sat out his second straight practice, after attending Friday’s in-stadium session in street clothes. Slater was missing for a second straight practice. He was also limited last Thursday. Strange missed most of the week with an apparent left leg injury.

Brown increased his participation from virtually nothing to being involved in walkthrough periods and positional work. He did not participate in live team drills.

On the second snap of an opening 7-on-7 drill, Jabrill Peppers figured he was in perfect position defending Mike Gesicki’s go route down the right sideline. And he was — until the last possible second.

Sprinting more than 25 yards downfield, Gesicki shot his right arm out and cradled Mac Jones’ throw with one hand before veering out of bounds. The athletic, 6-foot-6 tight end is expected to help the Patriots most in the red zone, but judging by that play and others, Gesicki could contribute all over the field.

His contract hold-in in the rearview, Judon was a full participant in team drills for the first time all summer. The rest, it seems, did him well.

Judon collected two sacks of Mac Jones and another of Bailey Zappe during 11-on-11 periods. He was a terror off the edge, even accounting for the favorable matchups he faced battling a talent-starved offensive tackle group. It should be no surprise Judon’s return coincided with one of the best defensive practices of training camp.

Note: The passing stats below were tallied during competitive 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods only. The stats in parentheses represent the quarterbacks’ camp-long performance.

Mac Jones: 13/20, INT (88/133, 4 INTs)

Bailey Zappe: 15/25, INT (81/127, 2 INTs)

Trace McSorley: 4/12, 2 INTs (43/74, 4 INTs)

The third-year safety corralled a tipped interception and broke up a deep ball in team drills Sunday. His pick came over the deep middle, where backup receiver Raleigh Webb initially reached for the pass intended for tight end Scotty Washington, who also tipped it before Bledsoe secured his second turnover of training camp. On the pass breakup, he stripped Tyquan Thornton after Thornton had successfully high-pointed Bailey Zappe’s slightly underthrown deep ball more than 40 yards downfield.

Douglas continues to exceed expectations as a late-round rookie, catching two more passes from Mac Jones in team drills and finishing with a team-high four on the day. He shook veteran defensive back Myles Bryant on one catch, while Bryant repped with the top defense at nickelback. The only incompletion thrown in his direction was an overthrow sailed several feet over his head.

Matthew Judon acknowledges Patriots didn’t need to amend contract

The good: Thornton earned five targets after being limited for two straight practices.

The bad: He caught just two of them, including a screen, while Bledsoe stripped one catch away and Myles Bryant overcame a six-inch height difference him to stop another. Thornton could fairly argue both of those balls were underthrown, but he must work harder for those catches. Not to mention, he was demoted to the second-team defense for much of practice.

Another late-round receiver, Nixon cooled off in a major way after arguably the best practices of his career earlier in the week. He tipped one Trace McSorley pass into the arms of rookie linebacker Marte Mapu, and had another target batted away by Jack Jones. Nixon caught one of his three total targets.
