Ex-Patriots defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington is expected to join the Packers’ staff as their new defensive line coach, according to ESPN.

Covington leaves New England after his first and only year as the team’s defensive coordinator. Covington previously served as the Patriots’ defensive line coach from 2020-23 and their outside linebackers coach in 2019. He originally joined the staff as a coaching assistant in 2017 after five seasons coaching in college.

Covington received his promotion shortly after Jerod Mayo was hired as head coach last year. The Patriots defense finished 22nd in points allowed and 30th by EPA and DVOA. Covington now exits after Mayo’s firing, the latest in a number of Patriots assistants who have not been returned under Mike Vrabel.

According to CBS Sports, the Patriots are targeting Colts assistant defensive backs coach Justin Hamilton to join their defensive staff. Hamilton just finished his only season in Indianapolis, which followed a year with Vrabel in Tennessee. In 2023, Hamilton served as a quality control coach on Vrabel’s final Titans staff.

Before arriving in Tennessee, Hamilton was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Virginia Tech from 2020-21. He spent four years total at Virginia Tech and previously served in a variety of roles at Virginia Military Institute. Hamilton also played in the NFL, making a dozen game appearances for Cleveland and Washington after entering the league as a seventh-round pick in 2006.
