The Patriots filled one of two open spots on their 90-man roster two days before training camp officially opens Wednesday at Gillette Stadium by signing ex-Navy linebacker Diego Fagot.
Fagot, who worked out for the Patriots on Monday before signing, went undrafted out of Navy last year. The 6-foot-3, 238-pound linebacker was with the Baltimore Ravens in training camp last summer. He finished this career at the Naval Academy with 282 tackles, 35.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, two interceptions, five pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, six forced fumbles and two defensive scores.
Fagot is now the second Navy product on the Patriots’ roster, joining long snapper Joe Cardona. Head coach Bill Belichick’s father, Steve, was a longtime coach and scout at Navy.
The Patriots also worked out wide receivers Jalen Hurd and Darion Chafin, quarterback Matthew McKay and defensive tackles Bruce Hector, Aaron Crawford and Khalil Davis, per a source.
Hurd was selected by the San Francisco 49ers out of Baylor in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He never took an NFL snap due to injuries and has been out of the league since 2021. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound pass-catcher was a versatile chess piece in college with Tennessee and Baylor, rushing for 2,844 yards with 23 touchdowns and posting 1,438 receiving yards with 10 scores.
Chafin is an undrafted free agent out of Incarnate Word. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound wideout caught 70 passes for 1,244 yards with 18 touchdowns last season.
McKay also spent time with North Carolina State and Montana State before transferring to Elon. He passed for 2,709 yards with 21 touchdowns and four interceptions last season. The 6-foot-4, 212-pound passer tried out at Dallas Cowboys rookie minicamp.
Hector most recently was with the XFL’s Arlington Renegades. He entered the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of South Florida and has spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions. Hector, who’s 6-foot-2, 296 pounds, has seven career tackles in 14 games.
Crawford has spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound defensive tackle has one tackle in one career game.
Davis, who’s 6-foot-1, 308 pounds, won Super Bowl LV with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s also played for the Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Rams and the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions. He has two tackles in three career games.
Patriots veteran players report to Gillette Stadium for training camp on Tuesday. The Patriots’ first training camp practice is Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. and free for fans to attend.
