GREEN BAY, Wisc. — Thursday’s session between the Patriots and Packers never reached the level of a melee, but there were six or seven skirmishes during the practice.
Those scraps eventually led to Patriots linebacker Anfernee Jennings’ ejection for leveling Green Bay rookie linebacker Keshawn Banks in retaliation for a hit on rookie defensive end Keion White.
Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was among the players on his sideline chirping at Packers players all practice. After a competitive draw in Wednesday’s joint session, the Patriots clearly came out on top Thursday and were letting the Packers hear it.
“You can see and hear when Pep’s on the field. And you can see and hear when Pep is not on the field,” outside linebacker Matthew Judon said. “When he’s around, you know. And when he makes a play, you definitely know.”
Peppers signed a one-year deal with the Patriots last offseason and then re-upped on a two-year contract this offseason. The Patriots are encouraged by the progress the seventh-year veteran has made this offseason now over a year removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL.
His standing on the roster was obvious last Thursday in the Patriots’ preseason opener when he sat out with the rest of the team’s presumed starters.
“Pep, he is who he is, man,” Patriots safety Jalen Mills said Thursday. “He’s a competitive guy, plays with a competitive edge. He’s always been like that since I’ve known him since college, throughout the league. He’s definitely a guy you don’t need to worry about bringing it each and every day.”
Peppers was especially vocal after Patriots quarterback Mac Jones hit wide receiver DeVante Parker for a 40-plus yard touchdown over Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas.
