Another one.
The Patriots extended a second starter in as many days Thursday, inking linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley to a reworked 3-year deal that keeps him under contract through 2025, per reports. Bentley had been set to enter a contract year and earn up to $4.25 million, including incentives. Bentley can now reportedly make up to $18.5 million over the final two seasons of his new deal, including $9 million guaranteed.
The 26-year-old is already a two-time captain and appears to be entering his prime. Last season, Bentley set or matched career highs with 125 tackles, six QB hits, three sacks, an interception and one fumble recovery. He’s expected to take over some of the signal-calling this year after longtime captain and safety Devin McCourty retired.
Patriots linebacker coach Jerod Mayo indicated as much in April, when he also called Bentley one of the NFL’s best linebackers.
“He is very smart, knows the entire defense,” Mayo said. “He’s fast, big, strong at the point of attack. He’s just a great player. … With the loss of Devin, it’s going to take multiple people (to replace him). But what I will say is that Bentley will be a huge cornerstone to that rebuild.”
The NFL Network first reported Bentley’s new contract, which followed a new deal for DeVante Parker that broke on Wednesday.
