Less than 24 hours after nearing terms with new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the Patriots began building out his staff Wednesday morning.

Ex-Jets running backs coach Tony Dews is expected to join the team in the same role, according to a report from The Athletic. Dews reunites with new head coach Mike Vrabel whom he worked for while Vrabel was the head coach in Tennessee from 2018-23.

Dews spent the first five years of his Titans tenure as the running backs coach, then moved to the tight ends room in 2023. Under his tutelage, former Tennessee running back Derrick Henry led the NFL in rushing with 1,540 yards in 2019. Last season, Jets running back Breece Hall ran for 876 yards and five touchdowns.

Before coaching in the NFL, Dews spent two decades in the college ranks. He worked at Millersville University, West Virginia, California (PA), Holy Cross, Central Michigan, UNLV, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Arizona and West Virginia. In college, Dews coached every position except quarterbacks and defensive backs, as well as special teams.

The Patriots reportedly hired Detroit defensive line coach Terrell Williams as their defensive coordinator Wednesday morning. The rest of their coaching staff, aside from McDaniels and special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer, has yet to be determined.
