After injuring his right shoulder and getting pulled after one series in Sunday’s preseason finale, Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett said Tuesday he feels “100% fine.”
“I hadn’t gotten hit in eight months, so it kind of surprised me more than anything,” Brissett said. “I’m excited, ready for the season.”
Brissett left Sunday’s game after the opening drive, a decision he described as “more of a precautionary measure.” On his third dropback, Brissett took a hard hit from Washington defensive lineman K.J. Henry, who came unblocked due to a mishap involving starting guards Sidy Sow and Layden Robinson. He was later ruled questionable with a shoulder injury.
Rookie quarterback Drake Maye followed Brissett and went 13-of-20 for 126 yards and a touchdown.
The two quarterbacks have been involved in a position competition that culminated Sunday in Washington, when Maye out-performed Brissett in a second straight preseason game. Head coach Jerod Mayo later said Maye has “out-played” Brissett in the competition, though the staff will weigh multiple variables before announcing who will start Week 1.
As for Brissett, the 31-year-old told WEEI he believes he is the starter.
“In my eyes, I am,” he said. “I haven’t heard anything differently. So that’s what I have to go off of.”
Prior to last week, Brissett took all of the starting reps in every training camp practice. The Patriots could name a starter as soon as Wednesday morning, when players will return to the facility for back-to-back practices that lead into a four-day break over the holiday weekend.
