FOXBORO — The Patriots saw two major returns and seven absences from Tuesday’s practice at Gillette Stadium.
The good news: Cornerback Christian Gonzalez returned to practice after missing Sunday’s session. Offensive tackle Calvin Anderson also was practicing for the first time this summer after being activated off of the non-football illness list. The team was in shells and shorts rather than full pads.
Guard Cole Strange and wide receiver Demario Douglas also appeared to be increasing their participation in practice.
New offensive linemen Tyrone Wheatley Jr. and Vederian Lowe were present for the session.
The bad: Running back J.J. Taylor, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, offensive linemen Riley Reiff and Conor McDermott and cornerback Isaiah Bolden were absent. Thornton, Reiff, McDermott and Bolden are dealing with injuries. Taylor doesn’t have a known ailment. McDermott and Bolden also are on the roster bubble, so absences during these practices hours before roster cuts could be hinting at upcoming moves.
Defensive end Trey Flowers and safety Cody Davis remain on the physically unable to perform list. If they stay on the PUP list through 4 p.m., then they would miss the first four weeks of the season.
The Patriots already have waived guard Chasen Hines, released tight end Anthony Firkser and traded kicker Nick Folk to the Titans, per sources.
