Patriots special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer confirmed Friday the team is planning to add another kicker for a training camp competition this summer.

John Parker Romo, a fourth-year veteran with 12 career field goal attempts, is the only kicker on the roster. He signed to the Pats’ practice squad in December.

Romo did not attempt a field goal for the Patriots last season, slotted behind Joey Slye who has since signed within the Titans. Romo is 11-of-12 for his career with a long of 55 yards. He joined the Patriots after a four-game stint with the Vikings last year and prior stops in New Orleans and Chicago.

Springer told reporters Friday that football character and consistency are the most important traits he’s seeking in the team’s next kicker. He also claimed he’s evaluated every kicker prospect in the country with assistant special teams coordinator Tom Quinn ahead of this month’s draft. The Patriots have several picks on Day 3 of the draft they could use on a kicker, including additional selections in the fifth and seventh rounds. The front office could also opt to sign an undrafted free agent after the draft.

In the same press conference Friday, Springer noted a new NFL rule change to move touchbacks to the 35-yard line on kickoffs puts an added emphasis on kickers who can avoid touchbacks and place the ball exactly where the team is targeting depending on its game plan.
