NextImg:Patriots place two veterans, one rookie on PUP list ahead of training camp

The Patriots are five days away from training camp, but they’ve already started making moves in anticipation of their summer practices.

The team placed starting guard Mike Onwenu, safety/special-teams ace Cody Davis and rookie defensive tackle Justus Tavai on the physically unable to perform list on Friday.

Onwenu, who started all 17 games at right guard last season, reportedly underwent offseason ankle surgery. He did not participate in organized team activities or minicamp practices this spring.

Davis, who re-signed on a one-year contract extension this offseason, missed the second half of the 2022 season with a knee injury. He did not participate in team drills during spring sessions.

Tavai is an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State and linebacker Jahlani Tavai’s younger brother. He was signed this spring after a tryout at rookie minicamp. He was subsequently released and brought back onto the 90-man roster.

All three players count against the 90-man roster and can come off of the PUP list at any time. The Patriots can place more players on the PUP list before training camp practices begin Wednesday.

Patriots veteran players report to Gillette Stadium on Tuesday. Rookies reported to the facility on Friday.
