FOXBORO — The Patriots are going through some inner turmoil during a six-game losing streak, but rookie quarterback Drake Maye’s performance and development has been a major positive over the last two weeks.
Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt raved about Maye’s progress while speaking to reporters Thursday.
“His development is where we need to be right now,” Van Pelt said. “I think he’s he saw the field extremely well last week. He knew exactly what the defense was giving him and when they tried to disguise. (He) took advantage of some throws down the field in those situations. So his development, I’m really happy with what he’s done from week to week. Again, and that’s from the start of the season, through watching his practice reps, just I’m happy there, we just got to continue to grow as a group.”
Maye was 26-of-37 for 276 yards with three touchdowns and no turnovers in the Patriots’ 32-16 loss to the Jaguars. The rookie quarterback was charted by PFF as having three turnover-worthy plays. Maye and Van Pelt were encouraged by the offense’s fast start, though the team was not able to sustain it past the first quarter.
