FOXBORO — Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has been impressed with his new quarterback Mac Jones early in his Patriots tenure. And the wideout has a pretty high baseline of comparison.
Smith-Schuster caught passes from two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger for the first five seasons of his NFL career. He won his own Super Bowl with quarterback Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs.
So, when Smith-Schuster starts tossing around comparisons involving Jones, it’s worth listening.
“The guy’s just super intelligent and like his work ethic is — it’s the best,” Smith-Schuster said Thursday after Day 2 of training camp. “I’ve seen a lot of guys work, coming into the office early, put in the work, and he’s one of those guys.
“The communication between me and him and all of the receivers, he speaks up. He sees what he sees and he talks about it. That’s the great thing about us, there’s no grey area in this offense. We speak about it, we talk about it. We fix it, and we move on.”
Jones had one of the most efficient seasons for a rookie quarterback in NFL history two years ago while playing under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Then he struggled as Patriots head coach Bill Belichick replaced McDaniels with Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, two coaches without any experience leading an offense.
Jones seems energized under returning offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bill O’Brien. The returns haven’t been overly positive so far in training camp as the defense has dominated the first two days of summer practices. But it’s a small sample size, and the team’s defense has considerably more continuity from the 2022 season.
