NextImg:Patriots impending free agent open to re-signing this offseason

FOXBORO — Few things have gone well for the Patriots this season, but their decision to sign running back Ezekiel Elliott to a one-year contract late in the summer has worked out.

Elliott was a key contributor in the Patriots’ 21-18 win over the Steelers last week with 68 rushing yards on 22 carries and another 72 yards through the air with a touchdown on seven catches.

Elliott, 28, was asked Wednesday if he’d be open to re-signing with the Patriots this offseason.

“It’s definitely been a good experience,” Elliott replied. “I love playing with Rhamondre (Stevenson). I’ve loved this team. I love this city. So I think I’d be open to it.”

Stevenson is currently dealing with a high ankle sprain, and it seemed like the Patriots didn’t trust their other running backs to carry the load against the Steelers. Kevin Harris, who was elevated from the practice squad, didn’t wind up play. Ty Montgomery, who didn’t receive a carry and caught one 17-yard pass on two targets, was waived after the game. JaMycal Hasty was inactive.

With Montgomery off the roster, it seems like the Patriots will plan to have Hasty and Harris back up Elliott this week against the Chiefs. But it certainly would not be a surprise if Elliott and quarterback Bailey Zappe are the only players to finish the game with any rushing attempts for the second straight week.
