NextImg:Patriots HC Jerod Mayo has surprising take on Thursday Night Football games

NFL players typically are not a big fan of the short turnaround that comes before a Thursday Night Football game.

Consider Patriots head coach and former linebacker Jerod Mayo an outlier.

The Patriots are getting set to play their only primetime game of the season Thursday night against the Jets. The contest comes just four days after they lost 23-20 in overtime to the Seahawks on Sunday afternoon.

Mayo is a fan of Thursday Night Football.

“I love Thursday night games. It’s like a mini-bye week,” Mayo said this week on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.” “After that game, we’ll get the players a few days off to reset, and then we can look at our team as a whole from a coaching perspective and really just do a major self-scout. We’ll have a couple extra days to do that.”

As far as the timing of Thursday night games go during a typical season, this one isn’t bad for the Patriots. They’re less worn down now entering Week 3 than they might be later in the year. The Patriots don’t need to travel far to New Jersey. And Mayo’s squad doesn’t have their actual bye week until Week 14 — the second week of December — so this is a good opportunity to take some time and look at things the team needs to fix after a decent sample size of three games.

It might be a little bit rough on running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who has 51 touches through two games, however. The Patriots also had three starting offensive linemen — left tackle Vederian Lowe (knee), left guard Sidy Sow (ankle) and center David Andrews (hip), listed as non-participants in Monday’s estimated injury report.
