The Patriots’ draft class already looks like a winner more than three weeks into training camp, and now they have another potential emerging starter.
Fourth-round pick Sidy Sow — primarily a college guard — has moved all the way from the scout team to protecting quarterback Mac Jones in training camp this summer. There’s no guarantee he’ll stick in that spot when returning starting guards Cole Strange and Mike Onwenu return from injury, but the ascension has still been a good sign for the Eastern Michigan product.
“He’s starting to develop some competitive poise,” offensive line coach Adrian Klemm said Friday on a video conference call. “He’s a young guy and some things are new to him. But he’s very intelligent, very sharp. And he’s been able to apply a number of things to the field that he’s taken from the classroom. It’s just a matter of being consistent and developing confidence, true confidence. He’s been doing that to some degree and really just continues to get better and better. I think you see him getting more confident in a number of aspects. It’s just consistency is the biggest thing. It’s a little bit new to him, but he’s coming along nicely.”
The Patriots currently have Trent Brown at left tackle, Atonio Mafi at left guard, David Andrews at center, Riley Reiff at right guard and Sow at right tackle. Reiff still seems to be the top candidate to start at right tackle when Strange and Onwenu return.
Sow has been assisted by Brown’s return.
“He’s been pretty good with the guys in the room in terms of mentoring and speaking up,” Klemm said of Brown. “He’s obviously done a lot more of that since he initially got here. He’s taking it upon himself to help guys along. He’s been very helpful in that way. I’m excited for that. Because I think that is a little something new, I think.”
Brown said earlier this week that he’s seen Sow grow “leaps and bounds” this summer.
