NextImg:Patriots free-agent addition will be shut down for 2023 season

The Patriots will not add offensive lineman Riley Reiff to the roster before his injured reserve activation window closes, head coach Bill Belichick announced Wednesday.

Reiff will finish his first season with the Patriots by playing just 46 snaps in one game. Reiff was expected to start for the Patriots at right tackle after signing a one-year, $5 million contract this offseason as a free agent but injuries got in the way.

Reiff, who converted to guard this summer, injured his knee in the Patriots’ final preseason game. He was activated off of injured reserve and played 45 offensive snaps at left and right guard Week 5 against the Saints. He was placed back on injured reserve October 21. After being designated to return from injured reserve three weeks ago, it seems he suffered another setback and will be shut down for the season.

The 35-year-old offensive lineman entered the NFL as a first-round pick with the Lions in 2012. He spent time with the Vikings, Bengals and Bears before joining the Patriots this offseason

Mike Onwenu moved from right guard to settle the Patriots’ right tackle position midway through the season. The Patriots had previously started Calvin Anderson and Vederian Lowe at the position. Rookie fourth-round pick Sidy Sow moved from tackle to take over Onwenu’s spot at right guard.

The rest of the Patriots’ offensive line has primarily been made up of left tackle Trent Brown, left guard Cole Strange and center David Andrews. Offensive tackle Conor McDermott and rookie fifth-round pick Atonio Mafi are the team’s top reserves.

Anderson, the Patriots’ other offseason veteran addition at tackle, is on injured reserve with an illness. Lowe and Tyrone Wheatley Jr. were acquired via trade before the season. Wheatley is also on IR, and Lowe has been a healthy scratch after early-season struggles.
