NextImg:Patriots extra points: Trent Brown reported to training camp ‘lighter than he’s been’

FOXBORO — After skipping the voluntary portion of the offseason workout program, it sounds like Patriots offensive tackle Trent Brown came to training camp in good shape.

Brown skipped organized team activities during the spring and was late to show up for minicamp due to a reported canceled flight. Brown was then limited in his only practice of the spring, spending most of the team’s second minicamp session working on his conditioning.

But head coach Bill Belichick praised Brown on Monday before the Patriots’ first fully padded practice.

“Yeah, Trent’s in good shape,” Belichick said. “He’s lighter than he’s been, and he’s been working at left tackle. Again, none of the linemen have been in pads. Nobody’s been in pads, so you’re working on the fundamentals, the footwork and the assignments that we can work on. Offensive and defensive line, that’s what they’ve been doing.”

Brown spent the bulk of Monday’s practice on a side field working on his conditioning. He had previously been a full participant in practice.

Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise said he’s seen defensive backs Jalen Mills and Jonathan Jones stepping up as leaders in retired safety Devin McCourty’s absence. It could be an early indication that Mills or Jones could be named captains before the 2023 season … Belichick had praise for new offensive line coach Adrian Klemm. “Adrian’s good. He’s a smart guy, good fundamental coach,” Belichick said. “He’s coached a lot of NFL players in college, and obviously coached the Steelers for a couple years. So, he has a good level of playing and coaching experience, coaching a lot of good players in some different systems. He’s just a well-rounded coach, good background with Dante [Scarnecchia], so, a lot of fundamentals that we believe in and that we’ve watched here for a long time.” … Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers said defenders have “noticed” rookie wide receiver Demario Douglas, an early standout in training camp. “He’s a small guy, but he’s tough as nails.” … The Patriots worked out four offensive linemen on Monday: guards Caleb Chandler and Tyran Hunt and offensive tackles Eric Smith and Micah Vanterpool.
