NextImg:Patriots extra points: JuJu Smith-Schuster sees Pats having multiple No. 1 receivers

FOXBORO — Through seven training camp practices, JuJu Smith-Schuster’s performance would indicate he is the Patriots’ new No. 1 receiver.

But don’t tell him that.

Smith-Schuster told reporters Wednesday he believes the team could have as many as three, including veterans DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne.

“I mean, just because they signed me to a three-year deal and I’m a new receiver doesn’t mean I’m a No. 1 receiver,” he said. “I think DeVante Parker is a guy who is arguably the No. 1 receiver. I think Kendrick Bourne is a No. 1 receiver. I think I can be a No. 1 receiver. At the end of the day, you have three receivers on the field, you have two receivers on the field, whoever gets the ball, I know they’re going to make the plays when they have opportunities.

“I’m not really too big into who 1, who’s 2, who’s 3, I’m into who’s on that field and who can make plays. All of those guys you could put in — Tyquan can make plays — so it doesn’t really matter.”

Thus far in training camp, Smith-Schuster has been on the field for virtually every snap the starting offense has run in team drills, followed by Parker, Bourne and Thornton. He also grabbed three catches Wednesday, when Parker went 2-1 in individual drills pitting receivers against defensive backs and scored a touchdown over first-round rookie Christian Gonzalez. Bourne has two receptions in competitive team drills all summer.

Quarterback Mac Jones spoke to former Patriots vice president of personnel Scott Pioli and reporter Tom Pelissero of NFL Network on Wednesday after practice. When asked about being the first player on the field and the last one off, he said, “The speed of the pack is the speed of the leader.” … Head coach Bill Belichick also spoke to Piolo on Wednesday. When asked which players have made major strides this offseason, he mentioned safety Jabrill Peppers, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, tight end Hunter Henry and linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley among veterans.
