FOXBORO — Don’t expect to see Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne practicing this spring.

That news came straight from new head coach Jerod Mayo in a suddenly more transparent Patriots organization.

Bourne was present for Monday’s organized team activities session in sweats as he continues to recover from a torn ACL suffered during the 2023 season.

“Honestly, it’s a week-by-week type of thing. We hope to get him out here, but he won’t be out here during the spring, I can tell you that,” Mayo said. “So, we’ll see going forward. That’s more information than you normally would get, right?”

Mayo said Monday that he sees the wide receiver group as a “wide-open competition” and a “crowded room.” He believes Bourne’s absence will open opportunities for younger players.

Mayo said other players also won’t participate in OTAs due to injuries and offseason procedures. That includes left guard Cole Strange (knee) and linebacker Jahlani Tavai (unknown), who were also present but wearing sweats on Monday … Mayo called Strange, “week-by-week” or “month-by-month” as he recovers from a late-season knee injury … Outside linebackers Matt Judon, Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings and defensive tackle Davon Godchaux were among players not spotted at all Monday. Mayo said Judon has been “in and out” of the building during the offseason workout program. Mayo also said, “Those guys that aren’t here are true professionals and they know what they have to do to get back and be in shape and ready to go.” … Mayo is awaiting word from the NFL on Kayshon Boutte’s status after the wide receiver was arrested for illegal gambling this offseason. “Yeah, I mean, right now he is out here. We will wait to hear from the league going forward, but he’s out here. He is doing a good job for us.”
