NextImg:Patriots experiment with position switch in training camp

FOXBORO — Patriots defensive end Keion White went back to his roots during Monday’s training camp practice.

The former college tight end was back on the offensive side of the ball, donning a green pinny and playing fullback during a goal-line drill. The Patriots don’t currently have a fullback on their roster, so in short-yardage situations, they might need to use an offensive lineman or defensive lineman as an extra blocker.

“Trying new things out,” White said after practice. “Just seeing where I can go, anything I can do.”

White seemingly got the better of Patriots linebacker Jahlani Tavai on one of his fullback reps.

“We haven’t talked about it yet, but I’ll for sure give him (expletive) about it,” White said. “But that was just a play. It is what it is. I’m sure he’s going to come back at me next time.”

As a tight end at Old Dominion in 2018, White took 18 snaps out of the backfield. He switched to defense the next season before transferring to Georgia Tech.

“Just trying to get back to that,” White said.

White is one of the Patriots’ most physically gifted players. At 6-foot-5, 281 pounds, White ran a 4.79-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in 2023. He caught 11 passes for 124 yards in 2018, so he could be a receiving threat if used on offense.
