FOXBORO — Speedy wide receiver DeMario Douglas tried to pull a fast one on the Patriots’ training staff.

They weren’t having it.

The slot receiver came out to practice on Friday wearing a standard white jersey. They made him shed it for the red non-contact jersey he’s been donning since he started participating in training camp last week.

“I tried to come out in the white jersey, but they’re like, ‘Nah.’ It’s all for the good, though,” Douglas said smiling.

Douglas said he’s dealing with a minor hand injury. It hasn’t stopped him from participating in team drills, however, where he’s added a much-needed spark to the offense.

He doesn’t know the timeline for getting rid of the red jersey for goo.

“But I feel like it’s for a greater good,” Douglas said. “I’m happy to be out there. I’m out there. So, that jersey isn’t stopping me from anything.”

Douglas said his primary goals for the regular season are to score a touchdown — something he didn’t do despite a standout rookie campaign in 2023 — and to stay healthy.

He’s benefitting early from quarterback Jacoby Brissett’s leadership.

“He’s been in the game for a minute, and he knows. He played under Tom (Brady),” Douglas said. “So, you know he has great knowledge of the game, and he’s teaching it to us.

“I sit next to him the meeting rooms, and he’ll be like, ‘you see this, you see this.’ As we break it down, it gets easier on the field.”

Douglas caught 49 passes for 561 yards as a rookie. He appears to be primed for a starting role in new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt’s offense.
