Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf scouted his newest quarterback this week in an appearance on The Adam Schefter Podcast.

Not Drake Maye — sixth-round rookie Joe Milton.

The Patriots selected Milton with the 193rd overall pick in last month’s draft, making him the fifth quarterback on their roster. Wolf’s front office has since released backup Nathan Rourke, whom the Pats re-signed earlier this offseason. That leaves Milton battling incumbent backup Bailey Zappe for the No. 3 job behind Maye and free-agent addition Jacoby Brissett this spring and summer.

Wolf explained why he drafted Milton by telling a story from last fall.

“I had the opportunity to watch Joe play live, the last game of the year against Vanderbilt. I got there really early and watched him warm up, and just watching him throw the football is unbelievable,” Wolf said. “He’s 6-5, 245 pounds. He’s got a rocket for an arm, he’s athletic. … He played in (Tennessee head coach Josh) Heupel’s offense there, which is not an NFL offense, but we feel like there’s some things that we can work with and develop.

“It was just one of those picks where, you know, there was too much talent in him to pass that up.”
