Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore missed the first half of last season due to blood clots and was later sidelined for the final three games due to recurring symptoms.

More than two months later, Barmore’s future in football appears uncertain, following comments head coach Mike Vrabel made to MassLive on Wednesday.

“I would say that I’ve enjoyed my conversations with him, and I would say that it’s too soon to tell,” Vrabel said of a possible return.

Vrabel added the team has a planned check-in with Barmore in the coming weeks.

“There will be a check up for where he’s at medically as we move closer to April,” Vrabel told MassLive. “But he seems to have the energy and the attitude that would be exciting to work with.”

Last summer, Barmore signed a 4-year, $84 million extension, including $31.8 million guaranteed. At the time, he was coming off a strong 2023 season, where he posted 8.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits, both tops on the team. Barmore, 25, entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2021 draft.

Without Barmore for most of last year, the Patriots finished last in the NFL with 28 sacks.
