The Patriots have swapped one wide receiver for another on their 90-man roster.
The team placed recently signed wide receiver Jalen Hurd on the reserve/retired list on Tuesday. Hurd appeared to suffer an injury Monday in training camp and was absent from Tuesday’s session. The Patriots immediately filled Hurd’s spot on the roster and in the wide receiver room by claiming Thyrick Pitts off waivers from the Chicago Bears.
Pitts, who entered the NFL as undrafted free agent out of Delaware this spring, was waived by the Bears on Monday. He caught 57 passes for 631 yards with 10 touchdowns in 2022 with the Fightin’ Blue Hens. The 6-foot-2, 201-pound receiver impressed at his pro day in March, running a 4.45-second 40-yard dash with a 39-inch vertical leap, 10-feet, 7-inch broad jump, 4.28-second short shuttle and 6.91-second 3-cone drill with 15 bench press reps of 225 pounds.
In six seasons at Delaware, Pitts caught 172 passes for 2,429 yards with 23 touchdowns. He also added four carries for 24 yards.
Pitts joins a wide receiver depth chart that already included JuJu Smith-Schuster, DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne, Tyquan Thornton, Tre Nixon, Raleigh Webb and fellow rookies Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and Ed Lee.
Hurd had been out of football since 2021. The San Francisco 49ers 2019 third-round pick signed with the Patriots on July 25.
