NextImg:Patriots acquire another tackle via trade with Vikings for draft pick

The Patriots, clearly discontent with their offensive line depth, acquired another offensive tackle via trade Sunday.

The Patriots are dealing a sixth-round pick to the Vikings for offensive tackle Vederian Lowe, a source confirmed to the Herald. Lowe, who’s listed at 6-foot-6, 320 pounds, was a sixth-round pick out of Illinois last year. The 24-year-old offensive lineman played four games without any starts for Minnesota last season. He spent 33 snaps at left tackle in Week 18 as a rookie.

Lowe played left and right tackle this preseason for the Vikings. He allowed two sacks and six total pressures in 140 total snaps.

Lowe joins Trent Brown, Riley Reiff, Calvin Anderson, Conor McDermott, Sidy Sow, Andrew Stueber and Tyrone Wheatley Jr. on the Patriots’ current offensive line depth chart. Reiff and McDermott are currently banged up, and Anderson remains on the non-football illness list.

The Patriots acquired Wheatley from the Browns in a trade for running back Pierre Strong earlier on Sunday.

Lowe was a four-year starter at left tackle at Illinois. He also started games at left tackle and right tackle in 2017, his freshman year.

The Rockford, Ill.-native ran a 5.22-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine last year with a 1.75-second 10-yard split, 25.5-inch vertical leap, 8-feet, 3-inch broad jump, 4.71-second short shuttle, 7.83-second 3-cone and 22 bench press reps of 225 pounds. His 35 3/8-inch arms rank in the 92nd percentile for offensive tackles.

It’s unclear how Lowe and Wheatley will fit into the Patriots’ offensive line mix. Brown will almost certainly be the Patriots’ starting left tackle, but the right tackle picture never cleared up this summer. Reiff and McDermott appeared to be competing for the role early this summer with Anderson out of practice. Sow served as the Patriots’ starting right tackle in recent practices but struggled in preseason action as a converted college guard. Reiff had been playing at right guard before his injury Friday in the Patriots’ preseason finale.

NFL reporter Jordan Schultz first reported the Lowe trade.
