FOXBORO — Tight end Hunter Henry has been a favorite target of Patriots quarterback Mac Jones this summer overall but especially within the red zone.
Henry caught another touchdown pass from Jones in practice Tuesday. It’s been a return to form this summer for that red-zone connection between Jones and Henry. They combined for nine touchdowns in 2021, their first season playing together. They connected for just one touchdown last season.
Henry said Tuesday that he’s feeling comfortable in his weight.
“Yeah, I’m a lot lighter in a lot of ways than I was probably two or three years ago, which is honestly, a good thing,” Henry said. “But, I’m still strong. So, that’s been nice – the weight I’m carrying has been nice. I feel like I’m moving good. As we move through the camp, obviously this is the time where soreness starts to come in and you just have to grind through that soreness. Once you break through it, your body starts to get accustomed to it.”
Henry is listed on the Patriots’ roster at 258 pounds but said he’s somewhere in the upper 240s or lower 250s.
Head coach Bill Belichick told Sirius XM on Monday that quarterbacks Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe will have “a chance to compete” in training camp. Belichick clarified before Tuesday’s practice that “Everybody is out here competing, all 90 guys.” There has been no semblance of a true QB competition in practice so far with Mac Jones taking all first-team reps … The Patriots hosted free-agent running back Ezekiel Elliott on a visit this weekend. They might have some competition for his services. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team has not ruled re-signing Elliott … Linebacker Jahlani Tavai on his reps at fullback in Monday’s practice: “It’s just another opportunity to stay on the field.” … Special-teams captain Matthew Slater was asked about 2018 first-round pick Sony Michel’s recent retirement. The Patriots might not have won Super Bowl LIII without Michel’s contributions. “We really rode him heavily in ’18, and he delivered for us,” Slater said.
