WOBURN — Once Scituate found its stride at O’Brien Rink on Thursday, Triton found itself under a tidal wave that there was no avoiding.

Led by a four-point night from Owen Lochiatto and a pair of goals from Luke Ryan, the fourth-seeded Sailors (19-4-2) cruised past the fifth-seeded Vikings, 6-0, and into a third meeting of the season in a Division 3 boys hockey semifinal against top-seeded Nauset.

“Our most talented kids are stepping up and that’s what you want to see at this time of year,” Scituate coach Brian Hurcombe said.

How good were the Sailors on this evening? Despite being shorthanded three times in the first period, Scituate outshot Triton (17-6-2) 7-3 and left the ice up by a pair.

“We did a lot of practice preparing for their power play because they’ve got some talented kids. The guys did a really good job with it and it was the turning point in the game,” Hurcombe said.

Ryan got Scituate’s night started at the 12:40 mark of the first period when he was the beneficiary of a foot race won by Lochiatto, who made a perfect pass to the right post for an easy tap in. In the final minute of the period Lochiatto faked forehand and slid a backhander home for a 2-0 lead.

Triton had several chances to cut into the lead during the second period, none better than Josh Hersey’s in the opening seconds off a Scituate turnover. But his open net bid was thwarted by the defense. Sailors netminder Mark Francis also made a pair of huge stops to keep it 2-0 before his teammates finally increased the lead to three midway through the period on Ryan’s 19th of the season.

“Mark has just gotten better as the year has gone on. That’s what we were hoping for,” Hurcombe said.

Any inkling of a Triton rally died in the opening minutes of the third as Nate Sannella, Lucas Henderson and Lochiatto all scored in a 3:26 span to make it 6-0 and invoke running time the rest of the way.
