NextImg:‘Our hearts are broken’: Cambridge’s Faith Lutheran Church pastor reacts to ‘agonizing’ fire on Easter

The devastated pastor of the Cambridge church that went up in flames on Easter said his “heart aches,” but he emphasized that this tragedy will not stop them from worshipping this week as he thanked the community for their support.

Faith Lutheran Church was being inspected on Monday following the 6-alarm fire on Sunday. Cambridge firefighters had established a “collapse zone” with Broadway shut down to traffic because officials have been concerned about the church’s steeple falling after the massive blaze. The steeple will reportedly have to come down.

The cause of the Easter fire remains under investigation. Faith Lutheran had a service Sunday morning before the church was engulfed in heavy flames and smoke in the late afternoon into the evening.

“What we do know is that no one was in the building when it happened, and no one was seriously hurt,” Pastor Robin Lutjohann wrote to the congregation. “For this we can give thanks to God. We also give thanks that apparently the fire did not spread to the surrounding buildings. Let us hold on to these reasons for gratitude as we face the time ahead.

“The damage to our beautiful house of worship is substantial,” the pastor added. “What this entails for next steps remains to be determined. But already many of our hearts are broken at the sight of our beloved building in flames. This is our spiritual home. It is agonizing.”

Lutjohann promised that the church members will worship together this Sunday — wherever and however possible. He also said they will feed hungry neighbors at Faith Kitchen; their friends at Temple Beth Shalom have said they will cater the meal.

The church will meet for prayer like they do every Wednesday at 6 p.m. on Zoom, and perhaps in person at a location.

“By keeping faithful to the commitments of our church, we are able to take some concrete steps forward in this seemingly impossible moment,” the pastor said. “And step by step, God will move us along and open a way for us to walk, even though right now all we see is loss.”

“Know this, too: a veritable flood of prayers, condolences, and offers of help have flooded in from all over,” he later added. “It is a testament to the impact our church has had on the wider community. We are not alone. We have friends who are eager to step in to support us.”
