A person died after reportedly stumbling onto the T tracks before getting struck by an Orange Line train Friday afternoon in Boston, police said.
MBTA Transit Police responded to the Jackson Square station for the fatal incident early Friday afternoon.
“An adult apparently stumbled and fell into the right of way and was struck by an incoming MBTA OL train,” a Transit Police spokesperson said in a statement.
“The individual has been pronounced deceased as a result of injuries sustained,” the spokesperson added. “TPD detectives are actively investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Investigators do not suspect foul play.
“On behalf of the TPD and the entire MBTA organization we offer our most sincere condolences to the decedent’s family and loved ones,” the spokesperson said.
At 12:29 p.m., the MBTA on social media alerted the public to a “medical emergency” at Jackson Square.
“Orange Line: Service between North Station and Forest Hills is standing by due to a medical emergency at Jackson Square,” the T posted. “Riders downtown can use the Green Line for alternate service between North Station and Copley.”
“Orange Line Update: Shuttle Buses continue to replace service while Transit Police conduct their investigation at Jackson Square,” the T later posted at 2:27 p.m. “Commuter Rail is free to ride between South Station, Back Bay, Ruggles, and Forest Hills.”
