A residential fire early Sunday left one man dead and a woman injured, the Hopkinton Fire Department reported Sunday.

The single story ranch house at 69 Hayward St. in Hopkinton went up in blazing flames around 1 a.m., leading to several 911 calls and a rush of fire crews.

Responders saw heavy fire on arrival, the Hopkinton department said, and were quickly informed of two people still inside.

Firefighters quickly moved into an “aggressive search,” the department reported.

Searchers found a senior man in the hallway and a senior woman in the bedroom, taking both out and transporting the couple to Milford Regional Medical Center.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the woman was taken to a second Boston location for further treatment of her injuries.

The department also reported that a dog died in the blaze.

Hopkinton called in support from Ashland, Milford, Westborough, Southborough, Upton and Hopedale, with station coverage by Medway.

Crews brought the fire under control around 2 a.m., the department reported, though the house — a one bed, one bath built in 1925, according to Redfin — was determined a “total loss.”

Hopkinton Fire also noted responders did not hear fire alarms upon arrival, and no smoke alarms were found in the house.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation by officials from the Hopkinton Fire Department, State Police and the Middlesex DA’s Office.
