New Patriots defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga was one of the team’s quieter free-agent additions this week, signing a 1-year, $2.7 million contract.

He’s a journeyman run stuffer, now on his fourth team in five years. Tonga is expected to back up fellow free-agent addition Milton Williams and Christian Barmore (pending Barmore’s recovery from blood clots). Even though his playing time may be limited, the 28-year-old said Friday he’s excited to join a talented duo.

“I know enough to know that they’re dominant,” Tonga said. “I got to see them play. When Milton – obviously everyone got to see it on display in (the Super Bowl). I’m excited to be able to play side by side and do whatever I can to be with them.”

At 6-foot-4 and 338 pounds, Tonga stands out as the Patriots’ largest defensive tackle. He figures to replace some of the run defense the Patriots lost upon dealing former nose tackle Davon Godchaux to New Orleans for a seventh-round pick. Tonga originally entered the league as a 2021 seventh-round pick in Chicago, then spent two years with the Vikings and last season in Arizona.

Whether he’s stuffing the run or rushing the passer, Tonga sees himself being an impact player for the Patriots.

“I like to think of myself as a strong trying to be dominant in the front,” Tonga said. “But I played in so many fronts to where I feel I can be comfortable along the line, wherever they would (play) me most.
