A New Hampshire man is charged with pointing a gun at three people seemingly at random, including a 5-year-old girl, in Boston earlier this week.

Salvador Maldonado, 50, of Manchester, N.H., was charged Tuesday in municipal court in Dorchester with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. Judge Vanessa Velez revoked Maldonado’s bail on a separate case in Lowell and set a new bail of $1,500. Maldonado is due back in court on Sept. 5.

The brown Sig Sauer MCX Boston Police say they found in the passenger seat of Maldonado’s blue Honda Pilot when they tracked him down following multiple citizen complaints is actually an air rifle that fires pellets and not a regular firearm. But that fact was probably not known by those he purportedly pointed it at on Monday.

“To be going about your daily routines and then see someone point a gun at you is a terribly frightening experience,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “I’m very proud of these victims for immediately contacting police and providing them solid identifying information. Their actions may have prevented a more dangerous outcome here.”

Maldonado’s first alleged victim was a mother and her 5-year-old daughter, who told police they had stopped at a red light a little before 7 p.m. on Corbet Street in Mattapan near the Morton Village apartments and looked over to find her alleged assailant stopped next to her. She told police, according to a DA statement, that he was pointing what she described as “a brown shotgun” directly at her and her daughter. She said she fled and that Maldonado’s dark-colored vehicle had an out-of-state plate.

As police spoke with her, according to the DA, another call came in about a man walking around with a gun on Burt Street, roughly a mile away. Authorities say Maldonado popped off three shots, pointed the gun at the caller and then left the area in his Honda Pilot just to be arrested without incident.
