SATURDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

BOYS BASKETBALL

David Brown scored 27 points as defending Div. 3 state champion St. Mary’s advanced to the state semifinals with an 83-71 win over seventh-seeded Tech Boston. Omri Merryman (15), Nick Sacco (13) and JJ Martinez (12) all scored in double figures for the Spartans, who improved to 18-7 on the season. … Jaydan Exalus scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as No. 4 Cardinal Spellman (18-4) rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit to defeat No. 21 Bishop Stang, 59-50.

In the Div. 1 quarterfinals, Zach Wolinski netted 27 points as No. 9 North Andover (16-7) edged No. 17 Waltham 47-46. … Henry Bickford scored 14 points, including the game-winner with 21.1 seconds left, as No. 5 Needham (22-2) edged fourth-seeded Central Catholic, 43-41.

Cam Hoekstra scored a game-high 22 points as No. 2 David Prouty (23-0) defeated 10th-seeded Roxbury Latin 70-42 in a Div, 4 state semifinal.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Olivia Gamberoni scored 32 points as No. 3 Wahconah (20-3) advanced to the Div. 4 state semifinals with a 55-48 win over No. 6 Malden Catholic.

GIRLS HOCKEY

McKenna Colella is making a case for Div. 2 girls hockey tournament MVP, and with it, playing a huge role in bringing back the storied championship tradition that’s somewhat evaded the Duxbury girls hockey team over the last nine years.

With two critical goals in the second period of Saturday night’s Div. 2 state semifinal game at Loring Arena, Colella provided the game-winning and insurance scores for the second-seeded Dragons as part of a 5-1 win over No. 3 Andover. Her efforts paired nicely with two goals from Maddie Greenwood, Sami Norton’s second goal of the year, and a 25-save performance from Anna McGinty as the Golden Warriors outshot Duxbury 26-17 in a game that the latter quickly ran away with.

Fresh off scoring the game-winner against Malden Catholic in the quarterfinal round, Colella’s impact can’t be understated as the Dragons get back to TD Garden for the first time since winning a fourth straight state title in 2014. Now they get a shot at revenge against the team that ousted them last season, No. 4 Canton.

Duxbury had jumped out to a quick lead on Greenwood’s first goal in the opening three minutes, but Andover showed plenty of fight on Rose MacLean’s impressive finish seven minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. The Golden Warriors found success limiting Duxbury’s chances while creating several of their own, but couldn’t execute quite like the Dragons did.

Colella tallied her first goal to start the second for the 2-1 lead, then notched her second two minutes later as she lost her footing before crashing into the boards. Greenwood tallie her second only 21 seconds into the third on a power play, and Norton added another power-play goal with 8:19 to go.    Audrey Koen scored the game-winning goal with 2:38 left as No. 4 Canton (19-2-4) knocked off top-seeded Archbishop Williams 1-0 in a Div. 2 state semifinal.

BOYS HOCKEY

Johnny Donahue’s second goal of the game broke a 2-2 tie in the third period and Teagen Pratt followed with an empty netter as No. 1 Scituate (20-4-2) defeated fifth-seeded Watertown/Wayland (14-7-3) in a Div. 3 state semifinal.
