A 34-year-old man is accused of stealing an MBTA Ride van with a passenger still inside, driving down Interstate 93 from Woburn to Boston before slamming into several vehicles in the O’Neill Tunnel on Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect eventually got out of the MBTA vehicle and fled into the Bostonian Hotel, according to police who swarmed the hotel near Faneuil Hall and found him hiding in a function room.

The man, who was not immediately identified by police, was arrested and transported to MBTA Transit Police headquarters for booking.

The incident started at around 3:30 p.m. when an MBTA Ride driver parked the vehicle near 2 Elm St., in Woburn. The Ford Flex van had one female passenger aboard, and the woman was described as having intellectual challenges, police said.

When the van was parked in Woburn, the driver got out of the vehicle while the keys were reportedly left in the ignition. That’s when the 34-year-old man got in the vehicle and drove away.

The passenger began calling 911 seeking help, police said.

Several minutes later, a Massachusetts State Police patrol located the vehicle in the O’Neill Tunnel and tried to stop it. The suspect crashed into multiple vehicles in the tunnel and continued to flee on I-93 south in Boston.

Police minutes later found the vehicle at Mercantile Street and Surface Road in Boston, and the suspect was in the Bostonian Hotel.

The female passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries, and she was transported to a local hospital for emergency care.

About three other vehicles sustained damage as a result of the incident. The occupants of the vehicles that the suspect struck in the tunnel did not report any injuries.

The incident remains an ongoing and active investigation.
