As dangerously dry fire conditions continue across Massachusetts, firefighters continued to battle a massive brush fire across more than 200 acres in Lynn on Sunday.

“The brush fire in Lynn Woods continued to grow in size last night,” Lynn Fire Department said in an update Sunday. … “The years of leaves and underbrush continue to act as fuel for this fire, which is intense due to the continued winds and dry air. As stated previously, the fire is not only running on the ground, but the winds have pushed it up into dry trees that are no longer growing.”

The fire in Lynn Woods, which was reported Friday, is one of many burning brush fires across the state as of Sunday evening.

The Lynn fire has spread over 100s of acres across Dungeon Rock and Waycross Rd. towards Jacksons’ Path over the weekend, the department said, and was headed east towards Gannon Golf Course as of Sunday. Lynn Fire said they were making efforts to keep it from structures along Pennybrook Rd. and Glen Ave.

Many Massachusetts counties fell under a Red Flag Warning again on Sunday issued by the National Weather Service, signaling dangerous dry, windy conditions that allow outdoor fires to grow rapidly. NWS recommends people across the state refrain from outdoor burning.

Lynn Fire said the brush fire is burning deep, and “rain is the only thing that will completely stop this underground burning” Sunday.

The department also told people looking to assist they can drop supplies like water bottles and snacks at Broadway Fire Station.

A new two-alarm fire also broke out in Gloucester near Quarry Street early Sunday, local fire officials reported. Gloucester Fire said they arrived on scene to find three acres burning Sunday.

The department said the incident was ongoing and companies actively worked to contain the blaze through Sunday.

Gloucester Fire emphasized again Sunday “outdoor burning is prohibited and that there is an extremely high wildfire risk across the state” and that people found participating in outdoor burning will be ticketed.
