Don’t put your shovels away after digging out Sunday morning — more snow is anticipated to be on the way in Massachusetts in the days ahead.
While the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for most of the Bay State for the weekend’s storm, meteorologists say another snow event is shaping up for early in the workweek and a bigger storm potentially later in the week.
The Winter Storm Warning was slated to go into Saturday evening at 7 and last through early Sunday afternoon at 1.
Meteorologists at NWS Boston had predicted a widespread 5 to 9 inches across the region Saturday night into Sunday, with the bulk of snow falling from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Rates could eclipse 1 to 2 inches per hour, they forecasted.
There was a low probability that areas across northern Massachusetts, including Boston, could see 10 to 12 inches, making this storm the biggest yet of the year.
“Drying out Sunday afternoon through Tuesday, with a period of below normal temperatures and limited if any snowmelt from tonight`s storm,” the forecaster’s discussion stated Saturday afternoon.
“Our weather pattern then becomes more active again with a coastal low pressure passing to our south Tuesday night into Wednesday,” it added, “that may bring light snow, then monitoring a stronger storm around late next week.
NWS Boston issued a Winter Weather Advisory for this weekend’s storm across the Cape and Island, with an expected snowfall of 2 to 6 inches across the region.
Gov. Maura Healey urged residents to prepare and be safe.
“While the timing of this storm is fortunate and will minimize disruption, it is still important that residents take caution and plan ahead,” she said in a statement Saturday afternoon. “We want everyone to stay safe throughout the night and be ready to enjoy Super Bowl Sunday.”
