NextImg:Massachusetts weather forecast: Springlike feel for 1st week of spring, elevated fire weather concerns

In one of the biggest shockers in Boston weather recorded history, the first week of spring is actually going to feel like spring.

After a chilly day on Sunday for Southie’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, temperatures are expected to rise this week as the calendar flips from winter to spring. Meanwhile, officials are warning about elevated fire weather concerns in certain parts of the state.

“We should be above normal for the week ahead,” Bill Simpson, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office, told the Herald on Sunday.

The normal high for Boston this time of year is 46 degrees, and Monday’s forecasted high for the city is in the low 50s amid mostly sunny conditions.

Temps on Tuesday should climb even higher into the mid-50s, with mostly sunny conditions again.

Wednesday’s high temps will dip back to the low 50s, as clouds move in. Some rain showers starting in the late afternoon are possible.

The rain showers should stick around on Thursday, with high temps in the mid-50s.

The National Weather Service has a special weather statement for elevated fire weather concerns across southeastern Massachusetts, along with the Cape and Islands, where there’s no snow cover following last week’s storm.

Other factors contributing to higher fire weather concerns are strong wind gusts above 30 mph and the minimum relative humidity dropping below 30%.

“Fire can spread pretty rapidly under those conditions,” Simpson said.

The National Weather Service’s forecast discussion said the best chance for fire weather concerns is Tuesday.

“With modest SW breezes and temps mid 50s to low 60s, potential for fire weather concerns away from existing snowpack with RHs (relative humidity) as low as 20%,” reads the forecast discussion.

After the rain comes on Wednesday and Thursday, the fire concerns will drop off.

As winter wraps up, the National Weather Service’s snowfall total for Boston is only a bit over 1 foot of snow — 12.4 inches of snow, well below the average snowfall of 44.6 inches.

“Snowfall across #SNE still considerable below normal for most of our region this season,” NWS Boston tweeted. “However…areas near & especially north of Route 2 as well as the higher terrain of the Berks it is a different story. Snow amounts for the season are near or even above normal.”
