A Massachusetts State Police trooper has been place on administrative leave after allegedly crashing into another car while driving drunk on Sunday, the State Police said Monday.
Just after 11 p.m. Sunday night, according to Tewksbury Police, officers responded to area of Main Street and Clark Road for reports of a motor vehicle accident.
Massachusetts State Police trooper James Doran, 28, of Tewksbury, was identified as the driver in one of the vehicles. Tewksbury police determined Doran was operating under the influence and arrested the trooper.
The driver and passenger in the other vehicle were taken to the hospital for evaluation, police said.
Doran was charged with operating under the influence of liquor and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
“Recognizing the serious nature of the charges, the Department placed Trooper Doran on administrative leave pending the outcome of a duty status hearing later this week,” the Massachusetts State Police said in a statement Monday night, noting the trooper was off duty at the time of the crash.
State Police said Doran is a member of the 90th Recruit Training Troop, which graduated from the State Police Academy on Oct. 9. All new troopers undergo a 12-month probationary period following graduation, State Police said.
Police reports stated Doran and his passenger were unsteady on their feet, had slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol, according to WBZ-TV and other outlets. He allegedly told police he had a few drinks, refused sobriety tests and had a open Bud Light and half-empty bottle of vodka in the car.
Doran was arraigned Monday and is due to return to court in December.
