The crackdown on fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July continued over the weekend, as Massachusetts State Police seized a massive amount of fireworks and arrested a Springfield man.

On Sunday evening, a trooper in western Massachusetts stopped a 2019 Infiniti QX80 SUV on Route 91 south in Hatfield. That highway stop led to an arrest and the seizure of a large amount of fireworks.

The trooper stopped the car because the vehicle’s insurance had been canceled. Then when the trooper approached the SUV, the statie saw the fireworks in plain view inside.

The driver, a 22-year-old Springfield man, was operating with a suspended driver’s license, and was charged with various motor vehicle offenses and unlawful fireworks possession.

The fireworks — 64 packages in all — were seized and transferred to the custody of the State Police Bomb Squad for disposal.

The unlicensed possession, use and sale of fireworks are illegal in the Bay State. Every year around this time, fireworks flow into Massachusetts from neighboring states, and State Police are on the lookout for the illegal products.

“Fires and explosions caused by illegal #Fireworks rebounded last year after a decline in 2021 — and so did injuries and property damage,” the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services tweeted.

“Don’t risk life, limb, or a day in court: leave fireworks to the professionals,” the state agency added.
