A local educator has been charged with sending pornographic images of himself to a 16-year-old student.

Justin Smith, 25, an educational support professional at Gateway Academy in Haverhill, was charged on Friday with two felony counts of distributing obscene matter to a minor.

Smith was arrested by Haverhill Police on Thursday, and arraigned in Haverhill District Court on Friday, according to the Essex District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors at the arraignment requested bail be $15,000, and the judge set bail at $4,000.

The judge also ordered conditions as requested by the DA’s office — that Smith have no contact with the alleged victim, no contact with minors, stay away from schools, and comply with GPS home confinement.

Smith is due to return to court on July 8 for a pretrial hearing.
