A driver who allegedly feel asleep drunk while in the middle of Interstate 495 was later chased by troopers, who deflated his tires before taking him into custody.

Newburyport man Kristopher Cole, 29, is facing charges after Wednesday morning’s chase on 495 south.

Massachusetts State Police received reports at around 1:13 a.m. of a dark colored vehicle stopped in the middle lane of 495 south in Lowell. When troopers responded to the scene, they found that the driver — later identified as Cole — was sleeping.

“Suddenly and without warning during the police response, the operator awoke and sped off to evade police,” State Police said in a statement. “Troopers observed the operator reach speeds of approximately 100 mph as he continued on Interstate 495 south.”

Troopers then deployed “Star Chase” and a stinger designed to deflate all four tires.

After the tires deflated, the vehicle continued on Interstate 495 south into Bolton at speeds between 34 and 45 mph.

The vehicle at around 1:45 a.m. came to a complete stop, and troopers took Cole into custody without further incident or damage to any vehicles.

Cole was charged with failure to stop, operating under the influence of alcohol, and possession of ammunition without an FID.
