Local meteorologists are warning that some isolated “severe storms” could hit the region on Monday, telling residents to keep their eyes to the sky and take shelter when storms approach.
The summer storms could bring damaging winds, heavy rain and large hail.
“Hit/miss showers & storms across southern New England this afternoon,” the National Weather Service’s Boston office tweeted on Monday. “A few could be strong to severe.
“A line of storms move in late tonight & may also pose a severe risk,” NWS Boston added.
The possible damaging wind gusts could lead to tree damage.
The afternoon risk for severe storms will be greatest west of Interstate 495. The night risk will be greatest across much of southern New England.
“Be ready to take shelter indoors when storms approach,” the National Weather Service wrote. “Have multiple ways to receive warnings.”
Shortly after noon on Monday, radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm in the Berkshires.
“If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building,” the National Weather Service wrote in a warning. “Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
“Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm,” NWS added. “Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.”
The moist, muggy, and unsettled weather pattern is expected to stick around through the upcoming week. There will be daily shots for scattered showers and storms.
It’s not out of the question that there will be a few strong to severe storms on Tuesday as well.
