Get ready to take it slow out there.
The National Weather Service is tracking a quick-hitting winter storm that will likely bring total snow and sleet accumulations between 1 and 4 inches — and ice accumulations around a light glaze.
NWS has issued a “Winter Weather Advisory” from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday for much of the region, excluding Cape Cod and the Islands.
“It will bring a little bit of everything,” said Bryce Williams, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office, who said the storm could change from snow to sleet, then to possibly freezing rain and rain.
NWS is forecasting about 1 to 3 inches for the Boston-area and I-95 corridor.
Areas farther north, especially north of Route 2, could expect 2 to 4 inches of snow.
“We encourage people to plan ahead for winter weather,” Williams said. “Snow, sleet, and freezing rain can cause some dangerous roads, so we urge people to take it slow.”
Snow is expected to overspread the region between 7 and 11 a.m. on Thursday. The snow will then change to a mixture of sleet and freezing rain throughout the day.
Mixed precipitation may change to all rain, especially southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor.
Temps northwest of I-95 will likely remain below freezing into the evening rush hour.
“Plan on slippery road conditions,” NWS wrote in its winter weather advisory. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes… Slow down and use caution while traveling.”
Following the storm, dry weather is expected for Friday into Saturday.
Then, forecasters will be tracking another low-pressure system that could approach the region some time from late Saturday into Sunday.
NWS wrote about the weekend system, “The track is rather close to our region, so likely looking at another precipitation mix.”
