MANCHESTER BY THE SEA — It was a day of playing catch-up at the 115th Massachusetts Amateur on Tuesday at the Essex County Club.

After a day interrupted by fog and rain on Monday, half of the 144-player field was back to complete their first and second rounds on Tuesday.

By the time it ended, however, there was one shining star.

John Broderick, a rising sophomore at Vanderbilt, caught fire in the biggest possible way. Making eight birdies, including five on the back nine, he carded a new competitive course record of 8-under 62 to finish as medalist with a two-day total of 9-under par.

“That was a fun day,” Broderick said. “After I made a birdie on the ninth, I told my caddie that we were going to have some fun on the back nine.”

Fun was being had by another player in that group as Ricky Stimets recorded a 5-under par 65 to jump into the top five for the match play portion of the tournament.

Not to be outdone, Cummaquid’s Aidan O’Donovan carded a 64 to finish second in the qualifying round.

Surviving a 33-hole marathon on one of the most undulating tracks around, Framingham CC’s Matthew Naumec finished with rounds of 67 and 72 on a day when the temperature reached over 90 degrees.

“It was a lot about energy conservation and managing your steps and things like that,” Naumec said. “Certainly, the body is going to hurt (Tuesday) but it’s a pleasure to be able to play 36 here at Essex.”

Playing 36 holes in a day was not a foreign concept to many of the players in the field as they have done it in USGA qualifiers and in college tournaments.

One of those well-versed in that is former St. Mary’s and current Holy Cross standout Christian Emmerich, who shot twin rounds of 71 playing alongside Naumec.

“It was a very long day and we were certainly feeling it coming down the last couple of holes,” Emmerich said. “College golf is a lot of 36 days and I’ve done well in those before.”

How tough was it for those players who had to finish on Tuesday morning and go right back out for round two? Only Collin Fitzpatrick (68) and Longmeadow senior to be Ryan Downes (70) could shoot par or better.

That was after only eight players had fired par or better in round one.

Several groups were left on the course when play was suspended because of darkness. They will return in the morning to finish before the match play cut of 32 is made.
