The Seattle Mariner claimed Mauricio Llovera off waivers from the Red Sox on Wednesday, bringing an end to the reliever’s brief time in Boston.
The right-hander had been designated for assignment last week to clear a roster spot for starting pitcher Lucas Giolito, whom the Red Sox signed last week.
Llovera, 27, arrived in Boston via trade with the San Francisco Giants in July. He posted a 5.46 ERA, 4.23 FIP, and 1.517 WHIP over 25 appearances (29 2/3 innings) for the Red Sox. After phasing out the changeup and four-seam fastball he used earlier in his big-league career, he’s become almost exclusively a sinker and slider pitcher. (He also briefly debuted a cutter in 2023.)
Despite debuting with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020 and taking the mound at least once in each of the last four seasons, Llovera only has 59 career major league innings under his belt. He owns a 5.80 ERA overall, with strikeout and walk rates of 20.6% and 10.1%, respectively.
The Mariners will be Llovera’s fourth organization, and he’s now out of options. Seattle must keep him on the active roster or remove him from the 40-man altogether.
