NORTHBORO — There wasn’t as much drama as a year ago but Mansfield gymnastics coach Lauren Dunn was not about to change the outcome for her Hornets.
Mansfield used consistency up and down its rotation to knock off top seed Newton North by just over a tenth of a point to win the program’s second straight South Sectional crown at Algonquin Regional.
“The good thing for us that from one to six, our athletes are only separated by tenths and that’s a huge help for us,” Dunn said. “We his on all four rotations and the kids had a great day.”
The Hornets were in second place behind Newton North after one rotation but used a stellar floor exercise, capped by a crowd-pleasing routine from Andrew Znoj, to grab a nearly half point lead on the Tigers.
That lead would expand even more in the third rotation when the Hornets shifted to bars and Newton North went to the beam.
Bridget Boni, Sophie Moore and Znoj all scored 9.225 or better as part of a 37.025 rotation for Mansfield that boosted the lead to 1.500 points with six performances left.
Brockton and Bridgewater-Raynham/West Bridgewater also were big winners in the third rotation as they jumped Medway into qualifying positions for next week’s state finals.
Newton North finished on the floor while Mansfield was on the challenging uneven bars. Led by a 9.100 from Paige Austin, the Hornets were able to survive a Tigers’ charge on the floor. A 9.550 from Molly Houghton led the way but the Tigers came up tantalizingly short.
Marlboro made a good run at Brockton in the final rotation but came up short as B-R and the Boxers clinched return trips to Northboro next week.
“Next week will be a real good battle with Central Catholic and those other teams,” Dunn said. “The great thing is we all start on a level playing field.”
